Native and Drought Tolerant |
|
 |
|
With our recent drought and limited water supply, many gardeners have been choosing drought-tolerant California natives and Australian Natives for their gardens.
Before planting drought tolerant and Australian Native plants, there are a few things to take into consideration. The first is that no matter what plant is to be planted, it will need to be watered regularly for one to two years before it will become drought tolerant. Also, the amount of water the plant will actually require is greatly dependent on what type of soil it is planted in. For example, a clay based soil will hold water longer than a sandy soil, therefore planting in sandy soil will require you to water more often. It is usually good to do is to cover flowerbeds with some sort of organic mulch, as well. Doing so will also greatly reduce the amount of water that will need to be applied to keep plants looking healthy. Because all conditions may vary, you must always be cautious and use judgment when watering plants in your landscape.
Here is a few example of the plants and there is much more in our nursery |

Hardy herbaceous perennial with upright, roughly hairy stems to 3 feet tall. Produces tight clusters of red buds open to small orange flowers June to September. Prefers well drained, dry soil and little summer water-grows naturally in dry, grassy places in Eastern and Central North America. Grow in full sun. Flowers attract swarms of butterflies. Asclepia consider the be one of the best plant that will bring butterflies to your garden.
New Cultivar of the Ceanothus family with striking pale yellow to lime green leaves have splashed of dark green. Leaves are more yellow in full sun and warm weather and more green in shade or the cold season. Pale blue flowers during warm season, good groundcover or container plant. Evergreen. Provide a well drained soil and water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, water deeply and infrequently during summer months.
Leucadendron that's “leuca,” not “leuco.” Shrubs and trees related to Banksia and Grevillea, all from South Africa. They are mostly grown for their colored bracts, which subtend cone-like flower clusters, usually in winter, but they are also quite valuable for their mostly neat, durable, often rich green or reddish tinged summer foliage and neat, almost formal habits. Some are used for silvery or silky foliage effects and willowy or wispy habits. Most like good drainage, moderate frost, and infrequent summer watering, but there are exceptions to each. They are dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. All can be used for cut "flowers," or have attractive, decorative cones and some are used for their cut green foliage as well. They make very forgiving and underrated container plants, able to take much more drought stress than most plants without damage.
This variety is called ‘Jester’ or also known as ‘Safari Sunshine,’ this plant has been around a while and we resisted raising it when variegated plants were considered oddities. But with the new emphasis on foliage effects it has come into demand so now we like it. It is a carnival-striped affair, green broadly edged creamy white to buff yellow, and tinting to coral pink, especially in cool or cold weather and especially towards the tips. When flowering (fall through spring) the bracts turn deep red. Growth is slow and compact to maybe 3-4' in a reasonable amount of time.
Provides a profuse display of lavender blooms more often throughout the summer than other selections. Lush green foliage forms a dense, uniform shrub that thrives the reflected heat along roadways, driveways & in parking lots. A tough, drought-tolerant, low-maintenance informal hedge. Dense, uniform shrub 5 ft. tall and wide. Full sun. Evergreen.
Provide a well drained soil and water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, water deeply and infrequently during summer months. Prune during cool months as needed.
Believe it or not, Plumeria also consider to be a drought tolerant plant. It's good for a pot plant and landscaping. Very easy to care for and it's a good mixed with native plants, cacti and succulent in the garden. Besides being a wonderful fragrant, the color also a breather taking and it brought a color to your garden.
A native to central Australia, Ptilotus offers exceptional beauty and the side benefit of heat and drought tolerance. Large, conical spikes of feathery flowers top thick silver green foliage. The 3-4" (7-10 cm) bottlebrush flower spikes are glistening silver with a darker neon pink color near the tips. Bloom during the warmth weather such as mid spring, summer, early fall. Excellent as an accent in mixed containers or as a compliment in flower beds, 'Joey' TM is a must have in any sunny garden location. 'Joey' TM is truly an exceptional plant to offer to customers who are constantly in search of "What's New?"
